Last night we played Local 506 for the first time. The sound was great - thanks Rusty and Todd. As the opener, we began to a crowd of the other bands, plus a few more friendlies.

What was more amazing than usual is people walked right up to the stage. The alternative is the bar-hugging type of crowd, in response to which the band thinks, "Hey you back there, yes, we're playing to you." The cool vibe is explained by the fact that the crowd was mostly a bunch of musicians who know that such a gathering is wanted. So thanks to the members of Saint Solitude and Salt to Bitters for doing that, and setting the precedent! We really felt connected to the audience as a result and went through the set in a trance of excellence. I didn't slip on a single lyric, for example.

So summer is over and fall is coming. It feels good.

Since our CD release a few months ago, we've been playing a lot of benefit shows, or free shows. We played two shows at Pour House, one for tornado victims and the other, Yoderfest, for the Chris Yoder building fund. Most recently, we played at SPARKcon (musicSPARK) on the musicSPARK stage near Raleigh Times. It was a great time. We especially liked the two-year-olds that were dancing in the street to our songs. You know, the classic double-knee-bend move that all kids know.

There is a trade-off to playing shows, and that is you have to rehearse for the show, leaving less time to write new songs. Well, we're fighting that tension as much as possible. We've recently gotten our hands on my favorite vocal mic, the Bluebird. And now we're recording demo versions of songs that will be on our next album. Our plan is for a full length.

The new songs are a more collaborative effort. We're trying to blend the nuggets we derive from improvisational jamming with the inspired solo pieces that typically make up the core of my songwriting. And we're also experimenting with new song structures and rhythms. My life has a new rhythm now - since I've been biking every day - and so I've been putting songs on my iPod that are fun to bike to: Arcade Fire, Animal Collective, the new PJ Harvey record, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and others. I think those artists have been inspiring me lately. The lyrical content has shifted as well. I say that as if it's separate from me, but I really do try to tap into a stream of consciousness when writing words. I try to flow instead of think.

We previewed some of the new songs at musicSPARK and for the first time we were compared to My Morning Jacket and The Cure. I think they were picking up on the post-punk influence that has either recently infiltrated our sound or has always been there under the surface. We still got the Radiohead comparison, which, I'll be honest, irks me at this point. People that have heard us a lot stop hearing Radiohead, but first impressions are hard to break. I think the main similarity is the occasionally long-held-out vocal note at the top of my range. That's Radiohead-like. I think I do that because I like violins and cellos and a voice is a good substitute. Radiohead is dramatic like us, but so is Sigur Rós (the only post-rock band I've ever listened to, besides local ones). And so is this song that I obsessively sang on a daily basis for years (how about those long notes, and falsetto?).

It took getting past teenager and rediscovering The Beatles for me to move beyond the grunge era and move towards a relatively eclectic musical taste. Tell me what Radiohead sounds like and it will take a while. Tell me what The Beatles sound like and it will take a while. (People of my mother's generation say we sound like The Beatles instead of Radiohead). Maybe we sound eclectic, I don't know. It's rock. I know it's not "Clear Channel" rock. There's a tendency in modern indie music to come up with super-labels for music, and it's become an alphabet soup, but I don't want to go there. I don't want to join a club that is so two-thousand-eleven. Music isn't fashion for me, it's art.

Suffice it to say, all the Radiohead references have compelled me to tone down what I think they must be talking about. I don't see it as a limitation, but more like an opportunity to explore my musical range. A lot of the new music is more upbeat, less somber. We have some swingy numbers, soulful vocals, epic instrumentals, open space, tightly coiled long songs and loose short songs. It's going to be eclectic, but it will sound like us.

So we started recording on our new EP today, and I have to say it's sounding great! We went in with six songs in mind to record, and had planned to knock out the instrument tracks today. Instead we left with seven instrument tracks and solid vocal tracks on three of the songs. Jerry Kee is a wonderful engineer with a talented ear, and we suggest Duck-Kee Studio if you need to record anything around here. Tomorrow we'll hit the tape even harder and make sure you have a pleasurable aural experience coming your way!

Raleigh or Durham this week

So here it is. We booked two shows on the two days preceding our recording. Crazy right? Both shows were simply offered to us, so we accepted. A recording, after all, is a performance that is best (cheapest) to get right the first time, so we reasoned that these shows would be fitting. At a show you get one shot to make a song all it can be (although I have painfully witnessed bands start songs over).

We didn't know what to expect from White Collar Crime. Our Matts had been there before, but we had never played a show there before. When Justin and I arrived, we were pleasantly surprised. The place looked pretty cool, and they had a diorama made by a local artist. Everybody that worked there was nice, too. So were the other acts: Antibubbles and Eddie Douché. Eddie generously offered a pair of monitors for us to use during our set, and as a result we were able to hear vocals at WCC better than at some venues that have indie rock shows all the time.

Shortly after 10pm we noticed a crowd starting to trickle in, and we didn't want the fashionSPARK after party to suffer from lack of music, so we took the stage. We were very comfortable. For this show, we decided to try a horseshoe stage plot arrangement. Matt was on the south pole of the horseshoe, I was on the north, and everyone else was in between. We felt more connected this way, and we think we're going to stick with this in the future.

After the show, we hung around for Antibubbles. My neck is sore from that. When we were in the audience, we noticed something strange. The crowd was incredibly eclectic. It was almost as if we had been twilight-zoned into an eighties movie with prototypical representatives of different subcultures. I think it's fantastic that musicSPARK caused different strokes to have a shared experience. Shortly after Antibubbles' set ended, we hurriedly kept our RSVP to Tilson's (Goodbye, Titan) birthday DJ party at Jackpot. Justin and I walked/jogged there. We then instigated a dance party. It started off with me. Then Justin and others joined in. Our clan was especially devil-may-care.

Before we left Jackpot, some friends gave feedback on our show, and the compliments were along the lines of "best show ever," "Justin really completes the sound," and "excellent songwriting." Thanks for those! We feel like we're in a good place right now. Some things have been falling into place, and we think our upcoming record will put us on the radar of those who haven't heard OFK.

30 days hath September

We've had a very eventful September so far, and it's not over yet, because today is September 14.

To start, a once member and founder (Justin/keys/vocals/guitar) moved to Raleigh to become a present member. He played a show with us the next day, and here is one of the songs we played (on Youtube):

That was at Kefi in Wilmington, NC. It was a last minute show, and we were the only band on the bill, so we ended up playing for two and a half hours. We found ourselves following Hurricane Earl. After crashing on someone's floor for the night, we hit up the beach in the morning. Lovely ten foot waves abounded. One of them said "hi" to me by scooping me up and flipping me to my back. Let's just say I was ex foliated by broken seashells.

Then this past weekend, we saw lots of bands at Hopscotch. It was an insane saturation. We met a lot of people, too, because Justin is much less of an introvert than me. In the process, Justin became an employee at Tir Na Nog. He's going to be saying hello to people when they want a seat.

We have two more shows the following week, too, followed by recording sessions for our upcoming EP. We're extremely psyched!

We are also planning a Tennessee weekend tour for Justin's birthday (10/10/10).

we had a great time at nightlight. it was our first time playing at the artland vortex, and we were impressed. the sound guy knew what he was doing, and the bartender was nice--thanks for the tea! there was a little mixup with cover...the flyers were made and printed with $5 before the cover was set at $3. unfortunately, the memo didn't get to the door and people were charged $5. sorry for the inflation folks! if you attended the show and you are reading this blog entry, we'll make it up to you with two free mp3's. drop us a line and let us know! speaking of which, we announced free downloads to patrons, and we are keeping that promise--we omitted mentioning how on stage, so again: drop us a line---our email address is our band name at gmail dot com.

now to the show! i'll start with one word reviews of the bands preceding us. Pistil-hypnotic. Doomstar!-energetic. our performance, according to the audience, was "amazing". well, like everyone in the audience we were not exactly energetic in the physical sense, but we put every ounce we had into the show. we learned two lessons in this show: take an afternoon nap, and make sure matt has some amps angled his way when the amps aren't in the monitors. we've learned these lessons before, but one forgets lessons.

the crowd was fantastic. more dancing took place than we've ever had a show, primarily thanks to Pistil's members. our music has a beat, i promise!---a free EP to the next person that does a waltz during stick together. to top it off, we were graced with the presence of Betsy Harris, who snapped many a picture; we can't wait to see her art. Secret Carrboro Ninja Patrol also made an appearance, but they are ninjas so we really just "sensed" their presence. let's just say we think a blog is forthcoming.

on july 4, Once and Future Kings played as a trio with rush enterline bridging piano and bass parts on a mustang. at our july 27 Nightlight show, we will have a bass player who rides zebras. matt robinson can be distinguished from our drummer matt austin by his beard. he will be playing this show with barely more than a week of rehearsal with Once and Future Kings, but his ears and chops will be there. this is going to be a great show with some fresh energy. we're playing with an indie pop punk band, Pistil , and Doomstar!, who play energetic ethereal rock.

We received an email not too long ago from that website Sonicbids about a pretty tempting opportunity: submit a song, and if you win, you can play at Forecastle 2010 and get up to $5000 for travel and lodging...

Then I read the terms:

"At the time you send your Entry, in whole or in part, to Sponsor, and whether or not your Entry is selected as a winner, Entrants grant to Sponsor an irrevocable right and license in and to the Entry, in whole and in part, and all the intellectual property rights therein, through-out the world for a period of five (5) years, and further agree to execute all documents and perform all acts deemed necessary by Sponsor to protect Sponsor’ license in the intellectual property. You will not now nor in the future be paid for your Entry or for granting Sponsor any of these rights. "

Wow--I can't think of any stronger language that suggests "you hereby sell your soul". I can say unequivocally that we'd much rather work our way to Forecastle. I've had the idea to play there ever since I randomly stumbled upon a free bumper sticker (that now decorates my Tele case). The sponsor is JanSport, and afterall, they are likely to pick a song that they think will grace an advertisement. But then, anyone who submits gives away their property rights.

There is also a clause in there that says you can't have any exclusive or non-exclusive distribution agreement, even a deal with an Indie label. So that brought me a new thought--a record label can protect an artist from a scam.

The idea of music as a product is a concept I have tried to tackle/accept/explainaway/deny on a few occasions. Our old bass player Josh Petty introduced me to the collective copyright (CC) movement a while back, and I have sympathy for it. It has a flair of altruism. And we might arrange the rights to our next record as some shade of CC. With Emergent Sea we were new to the whole process, and our producer arranged the rights for us.

Whatever we decide, our goal is for the band to be it's own animal and to pay for itself. That will be an accomplishment in its own right. And we would rather have people supporting us than a corporation. Have you ever tried to crowdsurf on a corporation?
